Monash Arts Expands Pathways into Graduate Research

Monash University’s Faculty of Arts is redefining how students enter graduate research, offering multiple flexible pathways that widen access and support diverse academic journeys.

As demand grows for advanced research skills and industry-ready graduates, Monash Arts has developed an interconnected suite of programs designed to guide students from undergraduate study through to doctoral research.

A Flexible Approach to Research Pathways

At the core of this approach is the recognition that students have varied goals, experiences, and levels of readiness for research. The Faculty’s offerings include:

  • Bachelor of Arts with Honours
  • Master of Arts Research Training
  • Master of Arts (research)
  • Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) - each supporting the development of critical research and professional skills.

Honours: The Traditional Gateway

Honours as a fourth, additional year to the Bachelor of Arts is, for many students, a way to cap their undergraduate degree, and it also remains a traditional pathway into research. This fourth-year program allows high-achieving students to transition from coursework to independent inquiry, combining advanced study with a supervised research thesis. Honours provides a strong foundation in research design, critical analysis, and academic writing, positioning students for further study at the postgraduate level. Unlike Masters degrees, Honours is part of an undergraduate degree.

Broadening Access with Master of Arts Research Training

This program equips students with essential research skills, including methodology and project development, and serves as a bridge to higher degrees such as the Master of Arts or PhD. Unlike Honours, which is generally undertaken either immediately after or within a reasonably short period after the degree, the Master of Arts by Research Training functions as a bridging program for students who have been away from University for some time, who graduated without Honours, but who have since accumulated professional expertise.

Continuing on from a Masters by Coursework

Students enrolled in Masters by Coursework can elect to complete research training and a supervised research project as part of their Masters.

Deepening Expertise Through a Research Masters, a PhD (or both!)

Following Honours or research training within a Masters’ degree, students may progress to the Master of Arts (research) or a Phd (research)  where they undertake a significant independent research project under expert supervision. The Research Masters degree is shorter (two years full-time) and the thesis is about 35,000 words. For many, it represents a critical step in refining research focus and developing scholarly contributions. Students who complete a Masters often continue to a Phd.

The Phd is three years full time, with a thesis of 80,000 words, and represents the pinnacle of academic achievement. High achieving Honours Students, those who have completed the Masters by Research training, and those who have demonstrated their ability as part of a Masters by coursework are eligible to enter a Phd without completing a Masters of Arts (research) first.

Multiple Pathways to a PhD

Monash Arts offers several entry points into its PhD programs, reflecting its commitment to flexibility and inclusivity. Students may progress directly from high-performing Honours results, or via a Master of Arts or Master of Arts Research Training.

Across all pathways, students benefit from a strong support network, including dedicated supervisors, graduate research panels, and access to professional internships. Monash’s active research culture fosters collaboration, innovation, and academic excellence.

These programs are designed not only to produce high-quality research but also to equip graduates with transferable skills that are increasingly valued across industries.
