Strengthening Indigenous Leadership Across Nations

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from Monash University, Australia welcomed peers from the University of British Columbia (UBC) and UBC Okanagan to Australia as part of a transformative cultural exchange offered through the Mungga Balard Gadhaba, Monash Indigenous Leaders Program.

Delivered by the William Cooper Institute, Mungga Balard Gadhaba, Making Us Strong Together in Boonwurrung language, is a two-year leadership program designed to empower Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to become the next generation of Indigenous changemakers.

The exchange program brought students together across Naarm and Central Australia, creating opportunities to strengthen leadership capabilities, share Indigenous knowledges, and build lasting global relationships between First Nations communities in Australia and Canada.

Throughout the two-week experience, students engaged with Indigenous-led organisations, grass-roots community leaders, and cultural practitioners, gaining unique insights into the diverse strengths, aspirations and knowledge systems of Indigenous peoples.

Beginning in Naarm, participants spent time on Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung, Boonwurrung, and Yorta Yorta Country, learning directly from Elders and leaders, giving students an opportunity to explore Indigenous-led initiatives while reflecting on the role of leadership in creating positive change.

The program then continued to Central Australia, where students travelled to Uluṟu on Aṉangu Country before concluding in Mparntwe (Alice Springs) on Arrernte Country. Students deepened their understanding of the enduring connection between communities, and the unique place-based understandings of leadership and positive change.

"Mungga Balard Gadhaba is founded on the belief that strong leadership thrives from a strong connection with community, culture and like-minded peers. Monash is a global University and we’re proud to bring Indigenous students together from Australia and Canada - creating powerful opportunities to learn from one another and build connections that will last well beyond this program."

For many students, the exchange represented more than a study opportunity. It was a chance to connect with fellow Indigenous students from different parts of the world, discovering both shared experiences and distinct cultural perspectives.

The program reflects the broader vision of Mungga Balard Gadhaba, which extends leadership development beyond the classroom through direct engagement with Indigenous communities and leaders. Participants are encouraged to develop the confidence, skills and cultural knowledge needed to lead in their communities, professions and future endeavours.

"One of the most powerful outcomes of the exchange is seeing students recognise the strength that exists within Indigenous communities globally. These experiences reinforce the importance of self-determination and community-led leadership."

The partnership between Monash, UBC and UBC Okanagan continues to demonstrate the value of Indigenous knowledge exchange across borders. By creating spaces for students to learn together, the program supports a growing network of emerging Indigenous leaders committed to advancing positive change within their communities.

Gifted by N'arweet Professor Carolyn Briggs, Mungga Balard Gadhaba honours the strength of Indigenous leadership and the importance of investing in future generations. Through initiatives such as the UBC cultural exchange, students gain experiences that challenge, inspire and equip them to lead with purpose.

As the exchange concluded, students left with strengthened networks, unforgettable experiences and a shared commitment to carrying forward Indigenous leadership globally - across communities and generations.
