Information cultures in marginalised communities: A case study of marine fishing community in Bangladesh
PhD candidate Joy Bhowmik established digital literacy training programs at three villages on an island in Bangladesh, delivering hands-on training for small-scale fishermen to build digital and information literacy skills and support them to act as “digital information champions” within their communities.
The initiative extends the practical impact of his research into the information culture of small-scale marine fishing communities in Bangladesh, as part of the Faculty’s broader PROTIC (Participatory Research and Ownership with Technology, Information and Change) II project.
Findings will inform recommendations to strengthen community-level information management aligned with local needs, with the intention of scaling the approach to additional villages.
