When her father faced death threats during the 1990s in his home country of Algeria for being outspoken against fundamentalism, Karima Bennoune decided to collect the untold stories of the thousands of Muslims engaged in his struggle. To do this, she set out to meet them, travelling from Afghanistan to Mali and interviewing nearly 300 people in almost 30 Muslim-majority countries. Her recent book, Your Fatwa Does Not Apply Here, tells the rarely-heard on-the-ground story of this ongoing battle. The book was chosen by the American Library Association's Booklist as one of the best books of 2013.
Now a law professor at the University of California, Karima has served on the Executive Council of the American Society of International Law and is a former Amnesty International Legal Adviser. Currently, she sits on the Board of the Network of Women Living Under Muslim Laws.
Karima will speak about the struggle against fundamentalism.
