This NAIDOC Week, join Monash University at the Monash Club for a thought-provoking reading of The Voice to Parliament Handbook by its co-author, Kaurareg Aboriginal and Kalkalgal, Erubamle Torres Strait Islander man, Thomas Mayo.

Co-written by Mayo and former ABC journalist Kerry O'Brien with cartoons and imagery by Kathy Wilcox, The Voice to Parliament Handbook is a clear guide with a simple purpose. It’s designed to answer frequently asked questions about the Voice and to elaborate on how a Voice can champion the closing of the gaps of social inequality in Australian society. The Voice to Parliament Handbook also looks into how this could be an opportunity to further reconciliation between First Nations Peoples and the non-Indigenous community. It’s constructed to equip voters with tools to spot misinformation and can act as a valuable resource to help Australians better understand what they can do in the leadup to a national vote.
Thomas Mayo is one of the Uluru Statement from the Heart signatories and has established himself as a leading advocate for Indigenous Australian advancement. As we approach the referendum on whether to enshrine an Indigenous Voice to Parliament to the Australian constitution, it’s vital that we as a Monash community can have the resources to have informed and constructive conversations about this important moment in Australia's history.
This event will see Thomas engage us in a timely and enriching reading and discussion to help inform our understanding of the Voice and how it could make a tangible difference in the lives of First Nations Peoples. We’ll also be joined by Monash’s Pro-Vice Chancellor (Indigenous), Professor Tristan Kennedy, who will share his insights.
We are thrilled to have the opportunity to hear Thomas speak, and we hope you can be a part of this important conversation at The Monash Club. Canapes and refreshments will be served after the reading.
