Understanding The Voice to Parliament

Join Monash HASS and Castan Centre Director Professor Melissa Castan to find out more about the Voice to Parliament.

The upcoming referendum on the Voice to Parliament is a landmark event in Australia’s Indigenous and Political History.

Organised by the Monash University Humanities and Social Sciences Club (HASS), this event will explain more about what The Voice would look like, its historical and legal implications and the impact it could have on Indigenous futures.

Panellists

Tui Raven
Tui Raven is a Yamaji/Nyungar woman who specialises in Indigenous engagement and the communication of Indigenous perspectives to audiences. Tui has experience working and liaising with Indigenous communities, as well as a background in Researching and Writing on various topics, from heritage to environmental assessments.

Melissa Castan
Professor Melissa Castan is the Director of the Castan Centre for Human Rights Law and is a Professor at Monash University’s Law Faculty. Melissa has over two decades of experience in Human Rights Law, Constitutional Law, and Indigenous legal issues and advocates for the role that legal reforms can play in advancing social justice.

John Sopar
John Sopar (any pronouns) is a proud Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara person studying Science and Arts. They've had the privilege of serving as the MSA Indigenous Officer for 2023, and have been campaigning for the Voice to Parliament throughout the year.

Tiffany Shellam
Tiffany is an Associate Professor of History at Deakin University. Her historical research has explored cross-cultural encounters between Aboriginal people, and European Settlers during Australia’s colonisation. Tiffany’s work has also included various research projects focused on the recovery of Indigenous Knowledge and the return of Indigenous cultural heritage to communities from overseas institutions.
