The mitoHOPE Program’s sole focus is to run a clinical trial to help determine the safety and effectiveness of mitochondrial donation in reducing the risk of mitochondrial disease being passed on genetically.

Under Australian law, mitochondrial donation cannot be used for any other purpose, including fertility treatment.

The pilot clinical trial cannot begin until all required licences have been granted by the relevant Human Research Ethics Committees and Australia's Embryo Research Licensing Committee.

At this stage, the trial is currently estimated to start in the second half of 2027*. This timing depends on the required ethics and licensing approvals and may change as the program progresses. Click here to learn more about the trial date.
