About the MRO

What we do

The Monash Research Office supports researchers and research administrators, acting as the key liaison point between Monash University and funding bodies such as the ARC, NHMRC and many others. We have in-depth knowledge of funding rules, guidance documents, instructions to applicants, funding agreements, reporting and variation procedures.

We work closely with other university support areas, university staff and researchers to support the development of coherent, compelling and highly competitive proposals, ensuring their compliance with funding body requirements. Once awarded, we work with researchers throughout the life of the award to ensure smooth administration and that reporting obligations are met.

Services we offer

The MRO offers a number of services across the research administration lifecycle. The MRO Service Charter explains how we work, and the MRO Service Catalogue contains a detailed description of our services.

Structure of the MRO

The MRO is made up of four teams, each providing a bespoke service to the Monash research community. These teams are: Applications, MRFF Research Development, Awards and Major Awards. The Research Development (RDT) and Contracts Management Office (CMO) teams work very closely with the MRO (and sit in the same office as us!) however are not technically part of the MRO. The Research Development and Contracts Management teams are a part of the DVCRE portfolio as well.

The Applications team provide support at the pre-award stage, which is the beginning of the funding lifecycle. Once a researcher has chosen a scheme and developed their application, the Applications team assist with eligibility and compliance checking, as well as timely submission of the application to the funding body.

The Research Development team also provide support at the pre-award stage, providing strategic advice and writing support to increase the likelihood of success. The team focuses on select schemes where support is most needed.

The MRFF Development & Compliance team provide end-to-end pre-award support for Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) schemes, including strategic proposal development, eligibility and compliance checking, and submission.

The Awards team specialise in the post-award stages of funding, including the set-up of new research funding, support of ongoing research funding, and the close-out of completed funding.

The Major Awards team provide a specialised post-award service for select high-value research activities.
