Related teams at Monash

The Monash Research Office interacts with many stakeholders inside and outside the university to facilitate research management. Below is a description of key internal teams we collaborate with.

Faculty Research Offices

Faculty Research Offices (FRO) are the first point of contact for researchers. They provide administrative and academic information, advice and support, including finding appropriate funding opportunities, assisting with grant development, and providing assistance with costing models and Pure. Some may support graduate research and business development activities also. From a pre-award perspective, the Monash Research Office (MRO) will typically work with FROs to answer eligibility and compliance questions, process internal EOI rounds and to ensure Pure applications have full approval to be submitted. Post-award processes (e.g. setups, variations, reporting), are shared between the FRO and MRO depending on the type of funding. To connect with your FRO, visit the Contact page, where you'll find your relevant contact under the 'Faculty Contacts' section.

Research and Revenue

Research and Revenue (R&R) provide financial services and information to researchers. They work closely with FROs to support project costing and provide financial advice across the lifespan of projects. From a pre-award perspective, the MRO work with R&R on the budget/costing for applications and scheme-specific budget enquiries. Post-award, R&R supports active funding by providing financial advice, managing funds and invoices, and facilitating financial reporting. For further information and to connect with R&R, visit the Research and Revenue Accounting Services website.

Office of the General Counsel

The Office of the General Counsel (OGC) is the central office within the University responsible for dealing with the University's legal matters. They provide legal advice to the MRO, Business Development Managers and researchers directly, as well as assisting with contract/agreement review and execution. Pre-award, the MRO works with the OGC to clarify legal interpretations of grant guidelines and sample funding agreements prior to proposal submission. Post-award, the MRO work with OGC to create, review and execute funding and collaboration agreements. For further information and to connect with the OGC, visit the Office of General Counsel webpage.

Contracts Management Office

The Contracts Management Office (CMO) provides a rapid path for a range of agreements with industry partners, via OGC-approved legal templates. These include Research Services Agreements, Consultancy Agreements, Confidentiality Agreements and Material Transfer Agreements. This makes it easier and faster for partners to engage with Monash University and for Monash staff to begin project delivery. The MRO activates Research Services and Consultancy agreements by setting them up in Pure for income receipt and funding disbursement and recording reporting milestones. For further information and to connect with the CMO, visit the Contracts Management Office website.

Enterprise and Engagement

Enterprise and Engagement is the area responsible for management of intellectual property and commercialisation. This team provides advice for industry-facing research, particularly when IP production, protection and commercialisation is involved. Enterprise and Engagement will often provide early visibility of commercially-focused schemes to strategic partners. Post-award, the MRO will work with Enterprise and Engagement when commercialisation or IP issues are non-standard. For further information and to connect with E&E, visit the Enterprise and Engagement website.

Ethics and Integrity

The Office of Research Ethics and Integrity (OREI) exists to facilitate the University’s research objectives by ensuring research activities are designed and conducted according to relevant Codes and legislation and that all appropriate clearances are granted before undertaking research. OREI administers the University’s Human and Animal Ethics Committees and the University’s Institutional Biosafety Committee and supports researchers with Biosecurity, Export Controls and Sanction requirements. From a pre-award perspective, the MRO will typically contact this team if clarification is required for application eligibility concerns. Post-award, MRO works with OREI on human or animal ethics queries, Pure advice, data integrity issues, and reporting. For further information and to connect with the OREI, visit the Research Ethics and Integrity website.
