Creating an Academia-Industrial Ecosystem in Indonesia

MISS 6 - September 20, 2023

Speaker:
Dr. M. Iman Santoso, Universitas Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa (UNTIRTA).

Collaboration between industry and higher education institutions is not very common in Indonesia. Both the university sector and industry typically operate independently from each other to achieve their performance indicators and solve problems and often lack awareness of the benefits and potential of cooperation. There is limited understanding of the advantages of how the two complement each other in terms of research, product development, curriculum enhancement, and workforce training. Matching Fund programs are the latest solution in realising the synergy between the universities and the commercialisation of industry partnerships that are promoted by Indonesian Ministry of Education & Research.

Dr Iman Santoso discusses the secured funding, international partnerships and projects that are underway at UNTIRTA. The ongoing innovations include the development of integrated plastic waste processing industry based on circular economy principles, photovoltaic module startups development, utilisation of steel slag as fertiliser, production of antibacterial plastic, digital ecotourism, new Biodiesel technology, mobile poultry slaughterhouses, superior tropical fruit plant propagation, and post-harvest production machine for liquid palm sugar.

Through these projects, UNTIRTA has begun to develop a collaborative ecosystem to meet the needs of industry and address societal issues through the increased competence and experience of lecturers as well as students.
