2023 Australia Awards
Enhancing Market Integration with Australia for MSME Business Leaders in the Creative and Cultural Industries.
In June 2023, Monash welcomed 18 Indonesian Cultural Entrepreneurs for a two-week program funded by the DFAT Australia Awards Indonesia.
Led by Dr Xin Gu, with School of Media, Film and Journalism, the program gave participants a way to understand, design and manage Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) in the Cultural and Creative Industries (CCI) in Indonesia, and to develop strategies to reach Australian markets.
The course equipped participants with sector specific knowledge of CCI business models, cultural management and organisational behaviour, cultural policy, creative ecosystems, creative entrepreneurship, digitalisation and storytelling.
The program, which included presentations from Professor Sharyn Davies - Director Herb Feith Centre and Professor Paul Long - Director Monash Migration and Inclusion Centre; also highlighted First Nation artists and practitioners in Australia, and explored opportunities to build people-to-people links, championed women entrepreneurs in CCIs in both countries and explored challenges and opportunities in addressing gender inequality.
We are grateful for and acknowledge the contributions of our partner organisations, including Creative Victoria, Victoria Opera, Next Wave Festivals, Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Collingwood Yards, Renew Australia, Melbourne International Jazz Festival, Heide Museum of Modern Art, Australian Art Orchestra, and the Rising Festival - to name a few.
Herb Feith Centre hosted the farewell reception where the audience heard from Pak Kuncoro Waseso - Consul General Indonesia; Mr Tim Kane - Victorian State Office Director, DFAT; Professor Katie Stephenson - Dean, Arts Faculty Monash University and Angela Simons - CEO Renew Victoria. Participants had the opportunity to showcase their products to the guests. Participants spoke of their time in Melbourne as being an empowering, inspiring and remarkable experience and shared their plans on how they plan to implement their learnings to develop their products and businesses.
The final element of the course will be held in Indonesia with partner organisations in Indonesia later this year.
