We are delighted to invite you to this month's seminar jointly presented by Monash Herb Feith Indonesian Engagement Centre, the Indonesia Council and the Australian Consortium for In-Country Indonesian Studies. This information session is designed to provide an update on the process of conducting research in and on Indonesia.

We will hear from a senior BRIN representative, as well as a number of scholars who have successfully obtained an Indonesian research permit and visa. There will also be an opportunity for participants to ask questions, either on the day or in advance (to submit your questions in advance, please email iclistdata@gmail.com).

This information session builds on our September 2022 session, Indonesia’s new research and ethics requirements.



Tri Sundari - Director, Foreign Research Permits BRIN.

Tri Sundari holds a Bachelor of Pharmacy (University of Airlangga) and a Master of Health Science (Queensland University of Technology). She started at the Ministry of Research and Technology in 2003 and in 2013 was appointed Deputy Director, International. In 2022, she was appointed Director of Management for research and innovation permits and scientific authorities.



Natali Pearson - President, Indonesia Council.

Natali Pearson is an early career researcher at the University of Sydney, where she researches and teaches at the Sydney Southeast Asia Centre (SSEAC). She is President of the Indonesia Council.




Evan Doran - PhD candidate, University of Sydney.

Evan Doran is a PhD candidate in the Discipline of Indonesian Studies at the University of Sydney. His research focuses on Indonesian higher education, with a focus on the research culture, productivity and quality of social science research. Evan has recently completed the process of obtaining Indonesian research ethics clearance, research permit and visa C315.




Nicholas Long - Associate Professor of Anthropology at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).

Dr Nicholas J. Long is an Associate Professor of Anthropology at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), where he works on the anthropology of Indonesia and on responses to COVID-19 in the UK and Aotearoa New Zealand. He won the 2019 Stirling Prize for Best Published Work in Psychological Anthropology for his article ‘Suggestions of Power: Searching for Efficacy in Indonesia’s Hypnosis Boom’.




Joanna Vogeley - PhD candidate, University of Sydney.

Joanna Vogeley is a PhD Candidate in the Discipline of Asian Studies at the University of Sydney. She received the Carole Muller Award in 2021 to investigate Balinese social entrepreneurs. Joanna has recently completed the process of obtaining Indonesian research ethics clearance, research permit and visa, and has prepared a detailed document outlining the process (available on request by emailing iclistdata@gmail.com).


In addition, we will hear from Sovi Arinta, Senior Education Services Director, Victorian Government, Southeast Asia Section, and Liam Prince, Director of ACICIS.
