Collaborators

Associate Professor Lauren Ayton
Associate Professor Lauren Ayton (B. Optom, PhD, GCOT, FAAO) is a clinician-scientist with a strong research interest in vision restoration, retinal pathology and clinical assessment of visual performance. She has led the selection and assessments of patients in the First In Human trial of Australia's first retinal prosthesis, and leading preparations of a clinical trial for the Boston retinal implant.

Dr Stefan Mauger
Dr Mauger is a seasoned MedTech developer and strategist. He had taken multiple inventions through to products which are now used by over 200k patients. Has been in deal teams investing in many medical companies while at Cochlear and at Seer Medical and planned the go-to-market strategy for epilepsy diagnostics.

Matt Gutman
Matt Gutman is a neurosurgeon with a special interest in functional neurosurgery and medical ethics, and has worked with Monash Vision Group to refine surgical tools and procedures in preparation for human trials.

Professor Laurence Meagher
Professor Meagher’s research focus is on medical devices, materials and surface coatings, and controlling biological responses via bioactive materials. He has developed technologies in collaboration with leading global medical device companies (Stryker, CIBA Vision (now Alcon), Cochlear) and cell therapy companies (Mesoblast, Regeneus, Cartherics), and has led a team generating surface coatings for contact lenses now used by many millions worldwide.

Professor John Forsythe
Professor Forsythe is an expert in biomaterials for neural tissue-engineering. His major research interest is in the field of neural tissue engineering, biointerfaces and smart hydrogels.

Professor Henry Ma
Professor Ma is stroke specialist and neurologist with strong research interests in damage to the visual pathways. Professor Ma has significant experience in conducting collaborative multicentre clinical trials.

Professor Thanh Phan
Professor Phan is stroke specialist and neurologist with strong research interests in damage to the visual pathways. He specialises in advanced neuroimaging techniques and in conducting neurovascular studies.

Associate Professor Jess Frith
Associate Professor Frith leads an interdisciplinary research team on biomaterials, which develop solutions for biomedical implant integration and tissue regeneration. Her work, both in academic and commercial collaborators, forms an important bridge between bioengineering, materials science and cell biology.

Dr Maureen Hagan
Dr Maureen Hagan is one of Australia's main researchers on the development of innovative animal models for functional tests of vision and the effects of electrical stimulation on the brain. Her work includes elucidating the underlying cellular communication mechanisms which underlie responses to visual stimuli across multiple brain areas.

Professor Mibel Aguilar
Professor Aguilar Bioanalytical and Biophysical Peptide Chemist, and has made significant contributions to the field of biomaterials. Her research in this field has developed novel functional biomaterials with long-lasting efficacy.
