Block pop-ups

What to do

Use a pop-up and ad blocker to avoid malware when browsing the internet.

How to do it

At Monash we use uBlock Origin and uBlock Origin Lite on University-issued laptops and computers. Your Monash issued device should have the one of these browser extensions installed in Chrome, Edge and Firefox.

If you don’t have it on your Monash device, contact the Service Desk.

Why it matters

On top of just being annoying, pop-ups can contain harmful malware that can infect your device. Some ads can contain malware too.

We recommend using pop-up blockers on your personal devices for the same reasons.

Generally, pop-up blockers are installed to avoid pop-up ads from web pages, but they can also block additional browser windows and ads embedded on the page.

Depending on the pop-up blocker, it may also block useful information such as print or download options screens. In this case you can instruct the pop-up blocker to ignore that page.
Your Monash issued device should already have uBlock Origin installed, but if you want to install it on your personal devices you can find it in your internet browser’s extension store.
