Before you go

  • Have MFA enabled on your phone.
  • Set your MFA backup codes so you can reset your MFA without having to call the Service Desk (and keep these safe).
  • Check that the Monash VPN is installed on your devices.
  • If you’re intending to travel and log in from China, see register for MFA and log in from China.
  • Take the time to understand the technology requirements and limitations of the places you are visiting. Some countries don’t allow particular VPNs, phone payment methods or encrypted devices, for example.
Check

Do

  • Contact the Service Desk immediately if
    • passwords, MFA tokens or PINs are shared (accidentally or to government agency officials)
  • Always log in using the Monash VPN. This is required to access Monash services, and is recommended for all other browsing.
  • Be extra aware of phishing attempts.
  • Disable broadcast services like Wi-Fi access points, Bluetooth devices, and GPS when not needed.
Cross

Don't

  • Don't use USBs. If you must travel with a USB device, ensure it is encrypted, labelled and that it remains with you at all times.
  • Don't charge your devices with chargers that don’t belong to you. USB ports in airports, hotels, or cafes are common methods to compromise devices.
  • Don't use public workstations as they cannot be trusted. Assume that anything that you enter into the system may be captured and used.
  • Don't leave your devices unattended. Even hotel safes are not secure.
  • Don’t connect to unknown resources like Wi-Fi access points and Bluetooth devices.
  • Don’t accept USBs as gifts. These can be enabled to access computer systems once inserted.

When you return

  • Change your Monash password.
  • Change other passwords you used while overseas.
  • Delete any information you no longer need.
  • Reboot your devices by turning them off then on again.
