Register for MFA and log in from China
Some services are unavailable in China. To ensure you can install and use a multi-factor authentication app, follow the instructions that apply to your device.
Some local wi-fi networks may block access required to set up MFA Okta. It's best to follow these instructions on your 4G phone network.
Set up Okta Verify on your Android device
- Allow the phone to receive application installation files from sources other than the normal Play or App store.
- Go to settings to allow applications to be installed from unknown sources:
- you can swipe down on the notification bar at the top of your phone display, then tap on the top right settings icon, or
- search the internet on how to get to your phone settings.
In earlier versions, you can select Security, then enable Unknown sources.
- Download and install the Okta Verify app on your Android device.
On later Android versions, you can download the application through your web browser, then install the software from your My files or File viewer software. In this case, you would be prompted to Allow application installation from this source or you can search the settings for Install Unknown Apps to enable that application to install an Android application. - Open the account activation email you have received, and click on the activation link. You’ll see a welcome screen.
- Read and agree to the terms and conditions.
- Opt into Google Additional Services (you can skip this step if you do not want to opt into Google Additional Services).
- Register your mobile number for self-service password reset. This will allow you to reset your password without contacting eSolutions.
- Set a password.
- Secure your Monash account with multi-factor authentication (MFA).
- Select I have installed Okta Verify
- Scan the barcode.
- Select I have installed Okta Verify
- Store a copy of your backup codes. This will allow you to reset your MFA without contacting eSolutions (for example if you get a new phone).
- You have now finished activating your account. Don't remove the Okta Verify app from your smartphone – you need this to log into University services.
Some services are unavailable in China or through the Chinese Apple Store, including Okta’s default authenticator app. You'll need to install an alternative app.
Set up Microsoft Authenticator on your Apple device
- Using your device, visit the Apple App Store.
- Search for Microsoft Authenticator and install the application on your device.
- Open the account activation email you have received, and click on the activation link. You’ll see a welcome screen. (Alternatively, visit the Identity portal).
- Read and agree to the terms and conditions.
- Opt into Google Additional Services (you can skip this step if you do not want to opt into Google Additional Services).
- Register your mobile number for self-service password reset. This will allow you to reset your password without contacting eSolutions.
- Set a password.
- Secure your Monash account with multi-factor authentication (MFA).
- Select I can’t install Okta Verify.
- Click Setup under Google Authenticator.
- This will display a QR code on your screen.
- Open the Microsoft Authenticator app on your phone.
- Click + on top right corner to add a new account.
- Select Other (Google, Facebook, etc.).
- Scan the QR code on the screen.
- Click Next to proceed to log in.
