Co-design with students - Masterclass

Facilitated by: Associate Professor Janeane Dart, Dr Liza Barbour alongside Monash students
This workshop will provide an overview of current literature in co-designing curricula with students. It will share two case studies engaging students in co-design. Participants will also be provided with opportunity to consider and explore co-designing with students in their local contexts.
On successful completion of this masterclass, participants will:
- Describe the foundational principles of inclusive learning and teaching and how they aim to create equitable learning opportunities for all students.
- Apply inclusive learning and teaching strategies as part of an instructional cycle to develop accessible and engaging learning environments
- Collaborate to develop inclusive learning and teaching strategies to meet the needs of students across key areas of diversity
About the facilitators:
Associate Professor Janeane Dart is an Advanced Accredited Practicing Dietitian and Director of Education in the Department of Nutrition, Dietetics and Food, FMNHS. Janeane teaches across undergraduate and postgraduate programs in Dietetics, Nutrition Science and health professions education. Janeane’s teaching excellence has been recognised with several University Awards and she is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (UK). Janeane’s key research areas are exploring professionalism, professional identity and sociocultural factors in education (which was the focus of her PhD research). Janeane was awarded an Education Fellowship (Faculty MNHS) focussed on: Engaging students as partners - Towards a culture of curriculum co-design and engagement.
Dr Liza Barbour is an Advanced Accredited Practicing Dietitian and Senior Lecturer in the Department of Nutrition, Dietetics and Food. Liza's teaching and research focuses on sustainable food systems, public health nutrition, sustainable development and planetary health. In 2023, Liza was awarded an Education Fellowship (Faculty of MNHS) to increase the quantity and quality of planetary health curricula offered to health professions students. Liza and her team of co-investigators engaged educators and students from twelve health disciplines to co-design, pilot and refine a suite of learning and teaching activities, utilising a process that aimed to simultaneously empower students and enhance educator capacity.
