Adopting a critical position

What is the language of adopting a critical position?

Adopting a critical position involves presenting an organised, well-researched and well-developed argument. The aim is to inform and persuade others of your point of view on a particular topic. The skills of analysing, interpreting, questioning; as well as evaluating and judging the evidence, theories and ideas of others are essential in adopting a critical position.

In taking a critical stance, you’ll develop a main argument on the topic; then, you’ll develop contributing arguments or reasons to support your position. It is crucial that you have a well-defined and consistent point of view on the topic whether you are ‘for’ or ‘against’ or considering alternatives. This critical position is strengthened by a relevant and coherent line of thoughts and reasons. Your reasoning is made up of a logical synthesis of examples, evidence, interpretations and evaluations. Finally, your critical position is evaluated and summarised in a strong conclusion.

Critical positions can be expressed in writing and oral presentations as well as multimodal formats like infographics, slides and video.
