The language of writing about data

What is writing about your data?
Data plays an important role in your research assignments. How you present your data will have an impact on how effectively you communicate your ideas throughout your work.
You may write about your data in certain sections of your assignment or thesis, such as the findings and discussion sections. This writing usually involves presenting, interpreting and analysing your data. Presenting data refers to the use of various graphical techniques to visually show the relationship between different data sets. Interpreting data involves reviewing data using various analytical methods so that relevant conclusions can be made. Analysing data means applying statistical/logical techniques to obtain useful information, which then can be used to make informed decisions.
When writing about your data, try to walk the readers through and keep in mind these questions:
- What story is your data telling?
- What does your data mean in a particular context?
- What does your data mean for your target audience?
