The scholarship

Cambridge Australia Scholarships (CAS) offers a number of postgraduate scholarships to attend the University of Cambridge, funding up to 15 students per year. All PhD scholarships are fully funded and the Masters scholarships are a mix of full and half funding.

You can apply for the scholarship for any full-time postgraduate course except for a Master’s of Business.

CAS recipients become part of a wonderful and welcoming group of Alumni based in Australia and around the world. With on-the-ground support in Cambridge, CAS runs a number of events throughout the year for its scholars to get together and support each other, and assistance for those approaching graduation to prepare them for what comes next.

Applications

How to apply

You can apply for the scholarship when you apply for admission to a graduate course. For all the details on how to apply, check the Cambridge postgraduate study site.

All you need to do is complete the funding section of the graduate application form (in the Applicant Portal). Make sure you tick the box Yes – I wish to apply for funding in your application.

Before you start, check the application and funding deadlines for the graduate course you’d like to study – you’ll need to apply by whichever deadline comes first.

If you’re offered a place to study at the University of Cambridge, your application will be forwarded to Cambridge Australia Scholarships. When you apply, you’ll be automatically considered for all of the Cambridge Australia Scholarships on offer, if you’re eligible.

Eligibility and selection criteria

Selection criteria

Fulbright scholars are selected on the basis of:

  • the strength of their proposed program
  • the potential impact and benefits of their proposed program for their institution, profession, employer and/or industry
  • their professional and academic background, and
  • their ambassadorial skills.

Eligibility

Citizenship and visa requirements

  • You must be an Australian citizen living in Australia.
  • You can't have dual USA-Australian citizenship or be a U.S. permanent resident.
  • You need a valid Australian passport and must travel to the U.S. on a J-1 Exchange Visitor visa, which requires medical and security clearances.
  • After the program, you must return to Australia for two years before you can apply to live or work in the U.S.

Engagement

  • You must not have started any studies or research in the U.S. before applying.
  • Your program must start in the U.S. academic year after you're selected (August through May), with degree-seeking students beginning in the US Fall Semester (July/August).
  • If you're applying for research, you need to have a placement at a U.S. host institution when you apply, except if you're a postgraduate student.
  • Scholarships are conditional on your acceptance to an approved school for your research or study period.
  • You can't hold another major grant during the Fulbright program. Any outside funding or grants must be declared and approved.
  • Scholarships can't be deferred.
  • You should plan to be in Australia in late February to attend the Fulbright Orientation Program and Gala Presentation Dinner.

Qualifications

  • You need to have finished an undergraduate degree or similar. If you're in the last semester of your undergraduate degree, you'll also be eligible as long as you're in good academic standing.
  • Postdoctoral candidates need a letter from an adviser confirming that your PhD will be conferred before the program starts.
  • If you're an undergraduate student who hasn't graduated, you'll need to upload a transcript showing your academic performance and credit points.
  • Postgraduate degree applicants might need to take the GRE, depending on the host institution's requirements.
  • If English isn't your first language, you may need to provide language proficiency test results when applying.
