Student profiles

  • Dr Pallavi Prathivadi

    Fulbright scholarship (USA)

Dr Pallavi Prathivadi was awarded the Fulbright scholarship to continue her PhD at the Stanford University School of Medicine in 2020.

"I'm passionate about improving safe pain management and appropriate access to opioids for pain and palliative care. I'm a general practitioner (GP) and I have first-hand experience with the challenges of chronic pain management and opioid prescribing.

My research explores factors that influence opioid prescribing practices, and looks into improvements for evidence-based prescribing in primary care. After completing my PhD, I hope to continue as a clinician-researcher and balance clinical practice with an academic career. In the future, my aim is to work in opioid policy on a national and international scale to support access to safe and effective pain management and palliative care."

Dr Pallavi describes the Fullbright scholarship as “career-defining”. Even before starting at Stanford, she enjoyed being part of the Fulbright network.

  • Celia Vandestadt

    Westpac Bicentennial Foundation Award

Celia was awarded an inaugural Westpac scholarship to do her PhD at the Australian Regenerative Medicine Institute (ARMI) in 2016 after completing her honours degree in Science. Celia believes that by doing her PhD at ARMI and within the Kalsin Lab that she will be able to make the scientific contribution that will launch her research career.

Apart from supporting the cost of her PhD studies, the scholarship program introduces Celia to a mix of high profile and high impact people that she would probably never otherwise have met.

“I’m passionate about cross-cultural collaborations and instilling young scientists with skills to help them succeed in our industry into the future. To address this I will be working with a team of fellow scholars to initiate an international student network.

Upon finishing my PhD, I would like to know that through my achievements and experience with the Westpac scholarship, and my time at ARMI, that I have the capacity to go anywhere and apply my knowledge and experience to a range of things.

  • James Barklamb

    Schwarzman Scholars (China)

James was selected for this scholarship in 2017 while studying a double degree in Arts and Law.

He hopes to use the experience to pursue work that engages emerging powers in global governance initiatives that support peace and security.

“Through my time at Schwarzman College, I hope to better understand China's growing presence as a military and diplomatic actor on the international stage, and how Chinese leadership can be shaped to protect vulnerable communities at risk of conflict.

The program's commitment to developing scholars as future leaders is incredibly exciting, and I hope to use this leadership training in supporting transformational change in international institutions in the years to come.”

During his studies James also interned with Rwanda's Commission for Fight Against Genocide under an Arts Abroad program and has volunteered with the Monash Castan Centre for Human Rights Law.
