Eligibility and selection criteria

Selection criteria

Fulbright scholars are selected on the basis of:

  • the strength of their proposed program
  • the potential impact and benefits of their proposed program for their institution, profession, employer and/or industry
  • their professional and academic background, and
  • their ambassadorial skills.

For more information about each of these criteria, take a look at the Fulbright qualities section of their Australian applicants page.

Engagement

  • You must not have started any studies or research in the U.S. before applying.
  • Your program must start in the U.S. academic year after you're selected (August through May), with degree-seeking students beginning in the US Fall Semester (July/August).
  • If you're applying for research, you need to have a placement at a U.S. host institution when you apply, except if you're a postgraduate student.
  • Scholarships are conditional on your acceptance to an approved school for your research or study period.
