The scholarships

The Fulbright Program is the flagship foreign exchange scholarship program of the USA, aimed at increasing binational research collaboration, cultural understanding and the exchange of ideas.

Fulbright offers funding for Australian citizens with any undergraduate level qualification to undertake masters degrees, PhD research, postdoctoral or short-term collaborative research projects in any field and at any institution in the USA.

Available scholarships

Postgraduate Scholarships support:

  • students to enrol in a graduate degree program in the USA
  • current graduate students undertaking their Australian PhD to conduct research in the USA for four to eight months.

Postdoctoral Scholarships allow individuals who have completed their PhD in the past five years (or who will have their PhD conferral before their proposed departure date) to undertake postdoctoral research in the USA for four to eight months.

Scholar Awards support academics (at associate or full professorial level) and mid-career professionals (with an undergraduate qualification and minimum of 10 years’ work experience) to undertake research in the USA for four months.

The Distinguished Chair Award is for an exceptional individual at full professorial level to carry out research in the USA for five to six months.

Born in the aftermath of WWII, the Fulbright Program was established by Senator J. William Fulbright in 1946. With his ethos of turning ‘swords into ploughshares’, he believed in transforming conflict into opportunity: the program used funds from surplus USA war materials to support academic exchanges between the USA and other countries.

The Fulbright Program has grown to become the largest educational exchange scholarship program in the world, operating in over 150 countries. In its 75-year history, more than 370,000 students, academics and professionals have received Fulbright Scholarships to study, teach or conduct research, and promote bilateral collaboration and cultural empathy.
