For prospective students

We are always happy to hear from prospective PhD students from various backgrounds, including physics, mathematics, engineering, psychology, biology, medicine, and neuroscience.

Several different projects are on offer. Click here for details of each project.

For general information about graduate research at Monash, click here.

Monash has two application rounds each year, with domestic and international applicants having different timelines. Click here for details.

At Monash, prospective students need to acquire a scholarship through the university processes to be admitted into a graduate training program. Obtaining a scholarship is highly competitive, with applicants throughout the Monash system ranked according to three criteria:

  1. Exceptionally high marks from their Honours (typically first class) and/or research Masters degree.
  2. Completed their Honours or research Masters degree from a highly ranked university.
  3. Due to a limited number of places, international students often require at least 2 first-author, peer-reviewed papers published in Q1 journals. Click here for what a Q1 journal means.

If you satisfy the above criteria, please follow the procedure below:

  1. Reach out to James Pang via email at james.pang1@monash.edu at least 2 months before the closing date of the Monash application round that suits you best, attaching the following documents:
    • Current CV
    • Full academic transcript of all undergraduate and post-graduate classes (with translations where required)
    • English language test (for international students)
    • Contact details of at least two referees
    • An example of written work (e.g., published papers or thesis chapter)
    • Indicate which project from this link you are most interested in
  2. Once an internal lab committee has reviewed your interest and decides that we can support your application, we will invite you for a video conference to discuss the possibility of working together.
  3. You will then be asked to write a 1-2 page project proposal, which will be reviewed by the internal lab committee.
  4. If we’re happy to support your application, you will then proceed with a formal application to Monash. Click here for details.
