2023 Herb Feith Graduate Research Gala

The Herb Feith Graduate Research Gala was held at the Monash University, Indonesia campus in Jakarta in December last year to provide a platform for connection with the Monash Indonesia staff and students, and to share more about a Monash Arts higher degree by research and the Herb Feith Centre.

Keynote speaker Prof Dewi Fortuna Anwar - Research Professor, Research Centre for Politics, BRIN gave an inspirational speech of the power of a higher degree by research, which included her fond memories of studying under Herb Feith in Melbourne in the 1980s.

The audience of over 50 people also heard from Dr Yulisna Mutia Sari - also Monash Alumna and Koneksi project researcher, Assoc Prof Narelle Warren - PhD supervisor, who shared more about a Monash University higher degree by research during the panel discussion that was led by Prof Alex Lechner, Professor and Vice-President Research, Monash University, Indonesia.

The audience were enthralled by Natalino Mella’s Performance of the sasando, traditional Indonesian musical instrument. It was wonderful to reconnect with Natalino whom we first met as a part of the Australia Awards - Enhancing Market Integration with Australia for MSME Business Leaders in the Creative and Cultural Industries, in Melbourne earlier in 2023.

The recipients of the inaugural Herb Feith Centre Fellowship were announced, and Assoc Prof Sharyn Davies was delighted to have Apriwan in attendance to personally present him with his award. Also, the Herb Feith Centre Academic Boost Awards were presented to the two recipients - Angela and Muliadi Limanjaya.

This pilot event was a collaboration between the Centre and the Monash HDR team with Monash University  Indonesia. The Herb Feith Centre team are grateful for being so warmly welcomed at the Monash University, Indonesia Campus and thank the team for their support and guidance. We hope to develop this initiative further in 2024.
