What is your research about?
My current project focuses on the interplay between progressive neoliberal cultures and the gender representations in post-2010s Asian diasporic cinema. My broader research interests include Asian immigrant films, East Asian cinemas, and their intersection with gender studies.
What do you hope your research will achieve?
I was drawn, firstly, to these post-2010s films that look very different from previous Asian screen stories, and then, to the heated media debates about them. Citing Grace Li from The Harvard Crimson, “loving Crazy Rich Asians is crazy complicated” for Asian-ethnic women living in the West. As a film researcher, I would like provide insight into how these new films can be understood and how new Asian female subjectivities can be negotiated in respect to the dominating neoliberal cultures.
