An Optimal Non-Wire Solution via Utilising the Inverter-based DERs in Distribution Networks

The optimal decision making plays a key role in many power system studies

The penetration level of inverter-based small-scale Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) is increasing at the distribution network level. The distribution network operator should find some efficient way to overcome the technical challenges of these units as well as utilising them as non-wire solutions. The Volt-Var optimization was implemented for the DERs to support voltage management.

Dr. Alireza Soroudi, Assistant Professor in Electric Power Systems at University College Dublin, discussed the practical successful example of the European RESERVE project which aimed to pave the way towards the ambitious goal of 100% renewable energy. In the RESERVE project, the successful integration of a diverse array of inverter-based DER trial site deployments into a single scalable control and monitoring platform served to validate their capability to support distribution networks through the provision of system services.

Dr Behrooz Bahrani, Senior Lecturer, Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering, Director of the Grid Innovation Hub, hosted the event.

Dr Behrooz Bahrani
Senior Lecturer at ECSE Department and Director of Grid Innovation Hub

Dr Behrooz Bahrani is a Senior Lecturer in the Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering department and the director of Monash Grid Innovation Hub. He received his PhD from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne (EPFL). Prior to joining Monash, he was a postdoctoral fellow at several institutions including EPFL, Purdue University, Georgia Institute of Technology, and the Technical University of Munich. His research interests include control of power electronic systems, applications of power electronics in power and traction systems, and grid integration of renewable energy resources.

Dr. Alireza Soroudi

Dr. Alireza Soroudi is an assistant professor at University College Dublin, Ireland, and an SFI Funded-Investigator of the ESIPP project. He is the author of the book "Power System Optimization Modelling in GAMS" in 2017. His research interests include optimization techniques in power system operation and planning, risk and uncertainty modeling of integrated energy systems. He received the prestigious ENRE Young Researcher Prize at the INFORMS. He is a senior member of IEEE and the Associate Editor of IET - Generation Transmission & Distribution and IET- Smart Grid journal.
