Connecting your laptop to AV systems

All teaching and learning spaces at Monash have laptop connection cables allowing you to connect your own laptop to AV systems.

If you don’t have wireless on your laptop use a network cable to connect to the internet and, if the room has a wireless keyboard and mouse, you could use a USB cable.

Cables and connectors

Mainstream or premium lecture theatres have the cables described below on the lectern itself. Classrooms have them stored in their beige or white AV cabinets usually located in the front of the room.

Our learning and meeting spaces provide users with different types of cables such as:
1. VGA or audio cable
2. HDMI cable
3. Network cable
4. USB cable
This cable will have two plugs attached to it – a VGA plug and an audio connector plug. Most older laptops would have a VGA connection which provides the video signal only. If your presentation involves audio then you will need to plug in the audio cable as well.
Newer laptops will usually have only a HDMI connection which provides both video and audio signal.
This cable allows you to access the Monash network if you aren't able to use the wireless connection from your laptop.
A USB cable allows you control the laptop using a wireless keyboard and mouse. The USB connector needs to be used if you are using digital inking with Smart Podium.
Your laptop should have a mini display port which you could use instead of VGA or HDMI cables. You’ll need to purchase a special purpose converter cable if you don’t already have one.
