Climate Vocabularies: New methodologies for music and science communication

Climate Vocabularies is a collaboration between researchers from the fields of music, science, and communication. It aims to develop and implement an innovative framework for transdisciplinary collaboration between music and climate science that enhances the capacities of both fields for climate messaging towards action.

Building on existing approaches to music-based climate communication, the project explores how music can enhance science storytelling, aiming to create more compelling and emotionally resonant climate messaging. The research aims to dissolve the disciplinary hierarchy, to entangle music and science researchers at all stages of this experimental process and reshape the possibilities for musicians and scientists to work together.

It positions music as a driving role in science communication, investigating opportunities for effective transdisciplinary collaboration throughout the entire research process, discovering points of opportunity for artistic connection and development, to inform research design and impact in both music and science. The project will develop, test, and share an innovative framework for interdisciplinary collaboration, assessing its impact on musicians, scientists, and audiences alike.
