From the moment first-year undergraduate students arrive on campus, they'll have the opportunity to connect with peer mentors who will guide and support them through their first semester at Monash.

Mentees will kick off university in a fun and supportive environment, building connections with their mentors, peers and faculties.

Mentors are students in their second year or above. They guide new students through their first year, sharing their knowledge and insights into the Monash experience. Mentors can attend professional development events, network with other student mentors and elevate their employability skills.

Peer mentoring is run in small groups. One-on-one mentoring is also available to eligible students.

Become a peer mentor and help guide new students from your faculty as they transition to university and settle into Monash.

Share your knowledge about life at Monash, gain important employability skills and participate in career development events. You'll also network with other like-minded student leaders in the program and make a positive impact on your peers.

Peer mentoring is run in small groups. You can also express your interest to provide one-on-one mentoring by completing the DSS 1:1 mentoring section in your application.

To be eligible, you must:
- Be enrolled as an undergraduate student at an Australian campus (part-time or full-time study load) or have recently completed undergraduate study at Monash and are currently enrolled in postgraduate study at an Australian campus
- Have completed first semester of study
- Be able to commit to supporting up to 20 commencing students through personal interactions (with a co-mentor)
- Be able to commit at least 24 hours of volunteering throughout the program (programs run for one semester)
- Hold a current volunteer Working with Children Check (WWCC) or be willing to obtain one

Become a senior mentor and help support peer mentors as they start their journey of mentoring others.

As a senior mentor, you’ll act as a “mentor to the mentors”. You’ll use your organisational skills to support coordinators to plan and deliver program events and activities. You’ll gain important employability skills, and access opportunities to participate in career development events. You'll also network with other like-minded student leaders in the program and make a positive impact on your peers.

To be eligible, you must:
- Be enrolled as an undergraduate student at an Australian campus (part-time or full-time study load) or have recently completed undergraduate study at Monash and are currently enrolled in postgraduate study at an Australian campus
- Be in your second year of study or above
- Be able to commit to two semesters in the role (one year)
- Be able to commit to supporting up to 20 mentors (peer mentors) throughout each semester
- Be able to commit at least 24 hours of volunteering throughout each semester
- Previous experience in the Peer Mentoring program, or equivalent leadership experience is desirable
- Hold a current volunteer Working with Children Check (WWCC) or be willing to obtain one

Looking for the next step in student leadership? Become a Peer Mentoring Coordinator in your faculty!

As a Peer Mentoring Coordinator, you’ll be involved in shaping the Peer Mentoring program for your faculty and work closely with your senior mentor team to build engagement within the peer mentoring community.

In this role, you’ll be taking on a new level of leadership, guiding senior mentors and peer mentors in their roles to help new students transition to university and settle into Monash.

- Previous experience as a Monash peer mentor, senior mentor or equivalent leadership experience is essential
- Be enrolled as an undergraduate student at an Australian campus (part-time or full-time study load) or have recently completed undergraduate study at Monash and are currently enrolled in postgraduate study at an Australian campus
- Be in your second year of study or above
- Be able to commit to the role for two semesters (one year)
- Be able to commit at least 30 hours of volunteering throughout each semester
- Be able to commit to regular meetings with the central Peer Mentoring team
- Hold a current volunteer Working with Children Check (WWCC) or be willing to obtain one

Nursing and Midwifery: Students elected as coordinators for the School of Nursing and Midwifery program will also sit on the executive team of Near Peer Teachers (NPT), as President and Vice president. You can access our website here, and sign up for Peer Mentoring by completing the mentee profile form.
This is an essential part to being part of the Peer Mentoring program! Check out the section on how to activate your profile here.
Yes you can! Please make sure to indicate this on your profile form.
- We aim to match you with your mentor by O-Week. Activate your profile as soon as possible to make the most of the mentoring experience and attend 4 catch-ups (one is optional).
- If you haven’t activated your profile yet, that’s alright because you can sign up at any time in the semester! We will do our best to match you within a week of you signing up.
- Once you have been matched with a mentor and your mentoring group, your mentor will contact you first on Moodle. In saying that, feel free to initiate the conversation on your Moodle group chat as well and say hi to your mentor and others in your Mentoring group too.
- You will be put in a mentoring group with other students in your faculty who are also in their first semester of studies. You will have this exciting opportunity to meet other first-year students alongside your mentor.
- If you have a friend who is also studying your course, it will not always be possible for you to be part of the same group because of the above matching requirements. However, you and your friend can still be part of the Peer Mentoring Community together by attending events that your faculty runs.
- If you’ve transferred from another course and have already undertaken the Peer Mentoring program in a different faculty, you may not automatically be included in the Peer Mentoring program.
- If you’d like to be part of the Peer Mentoring program again and it is your first semester of study in your new course, you can sign up using the profile form here. You will be matched with a mentor in your new faculty and a group of students in their first semester.
- No, since this program is not an academic program your Peer Mentor will only be able to help with common topics that students in their first semester need help with. For more information, check out the ‘What can I expect over the semester’ section below.
- If you’re interested in academic mentoring, please check out the Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) program!
- Feel free to ask your mentor any questions you may have about settling into your first semester at Monash, that’s what they are here for! If they don’t know the answer that’s okay, your mentor will refer you to an appropriate service or ask their Senior Mentor.
- A Senior Mentor is the Peer Mentor’s support person. A Peer Mentor will catch up with their Senior Mentor to ask them any questions they may have about their mentoring experience.
- In the first instance, your mentor and the mentoring group should use Moodle to communicate with each other.
- Later down the track, if consent is provided and the whole group agrees, you are able to use another communication platform.
- Once you are matched, your mentor should contact you using the Moodle group chat within 48 - 72 hours of being matched.
- If it’s been longer than that and they don’t reach out to you and continue to remain unresponsive, you can contact the Peer Mentoring Team using the Peer Mentoring Enquiry form.
Your mentor will contact you first and ask when you are available via Google Form. This is because they have to take into account the whole group’s availability.
You’ll have three catch-ups with your mentors and mentoring group over the semester:
- welcome and connect
- you and your University
- you and your studying and assessments.
Your mentor will also check in with you from time to time to see how you're going, and you’ll have opportunities to meet with your group outside of these catch-ups.
- We understand that everyday life can be unpredictable, and that you’re probably juggling a lot of things alongside your studies at Monash.
- We recommend letting your mentor know at least 48 hours in advance if you are unable to make it to a previously agreed upon catch up time or an event. This is for the benefit of the mentor and the group as well!

- We suggest you explore your tutor’s/unit coordinator’s consultation hours for individual unit questions.
- Your central location for study and academic support is the Student Academic Success webpage.

- Meet with a librarian online (assignment and research support)

- Additionally, if you’re looking to develop your personal & professional skills, Career Connect can help you ensure you have the skillset for where you want to be when you graduate.

- You must log 24 hours of volunteering in this unit. At the end of the semester our team will be able to sign off on the volunteer log - pending all requirements for the unit are met. Please refer to this FAQ for further questions.
Please submit your post catch up report in your Mentor X Senior Mentor connection plan in Chronus. Please refer to this video in your Moodle resources for more instructions.
- As a mentor, you are required to tick off all your tasks in your Mentor X Senior Mentor Chronus connection plan and log 20 hours of time spent on mentoring. At the end of the program, you will receive a Peer Mentoring certificate, have your 20 hour participation in Peer Mentoring added to your Australian Higher Education Graduation Statement (AHEGS) and your Student Futures profile. You will also receive a LinkedIn Toolkit.
