Alumni to Student Mentoring

This mentoring program matches Monash students with an alumni mentor to help them to gain industry knowledge and networks to support their transition to the workforce.

Through the course of the program, mentors and mentees will work together to focus on:

  1. Fostering growth and professional development
  2. Exploring potential career paths and relevant skills
  3. Transitioning to the workplace

By mentoring a Monash student, you can share your expertise and propel your mentee toward their professional, personal and study goals. Your support will help boost their confidence, inform their career planning and develop their skills.

You’ll be asked to provide a brief work history, select your areas of expertise and any other relevant work experience and based on your profile, you can be matched with a Monash student.

The time commitment for mentors is:

  • Attend and participate in an online induction event in the week beginning 10 August
  • Participate in three to four video meetings during the program
  • Meetings are to be supported by regular contact via the mentoring platform, email or phone
  • Assist your mentee in expanding their professional networks
  • Attend a final virtual celebration with program participants (where possible)

As a mentor you can:

  • Make a positive impact on someone’s life
  • Share your knowledge
  • Develop your leadership skills
  • Connect with like-minded alumni

The registration process is straightforward and includes terms and conditions governing privacy and conduct. As you’ll be mentoring a student you will also need to provide a current volunteer Working With Children Check. These take a few minutes to obtain and are free of charge.

Becoming a mentee gives you the chance to access the extensive global network of Monash alumni and benefit from the experiences and insights they’ve gained throughout their career.

Connecting with someone who’s in industry and who has been where you are now, is a great way to understand the important steps that you need to take to plan your career with confidence and prepare your transition to the workforce.

To be eligible, you must be:

  • A final-year student enrolled in semester two
  • Studying at an Australian campus

At the end of the program, there will be an opportunity for one-off mentoring (also known as flash mentoring), where you can reach out to another alumni mentor. This can help you gain additional insight into your preferred industry and practise your networking skills.

Student mentees will be given the opportunity to use one-off mentoring (also known as flash mentoring) in the final month of the program to gain additional insight towards their career ambitions with the pool of alumni mentors. This will be a great opportunity to practise their networking skills too.

Alumni mentors will be able to contact other mentors who are participating in the program. It’s an opportunity to build their networks and share information with like-minded professionals.

Please send us an email about your mentoring experience and we will share it here.
