SA-HELP
You can defer all or part of your SSAF with an SA-HELP loan if you're:
- an Australian citizen, a permanent humanitarian visa holder (resident in Australia) or a New Zealand special category visa holder who meets all the eligibility criteria
- enrolled in an award course (a course that leads to a qualification, like a degree, diploma or certificate).
How to apply
To apply for an SA-HELP loan, you’ll need to:
- submit a Request for SA-HELP Assistance in WES by 11.59pm (Melbourne time) on the SSAF payment due date
- provide Monash with your tax file number (TFN) or a Certificate of Application for a TFN (if you haven’t already).
You only need to apply for SA-HELP once for each course. If you change your course or change universities, you’ll need to reapply for SA-HELP.
We'll send you a Commonwealth Assistance Notice (CAN) to confirm your loan amount within 28 days of the SA-HELP incurral date.
Don't have a tax file number (TFN)?
If you don’t have a TFN, you’ll need to apply for one as soon as possible.
The fastest way is to apply online with myGovID (available for Australian passport holders) – once you’ve applied, you’ll receive your TFN straight away.
If you don’t have an Australian passport, visit the ATO’s apply for a TFN page for information on how to apply.
Waiting for your TFN
It could take up to 28 days to receive your TFN if you used an application method other than myGovID. You’ll need to provide proof of application to Monash while you wait (otherwise your account may be blocked) – see our TFN page for details.
As soon as you receive your TFN:
- log into the Web Enrolment System (WES)
- update your payment method in the SA-HELP section.
Incurral date
If your application for SA-HELP is successful, you can still make partial or full payments before the debt is transferred to the tax office. This allows you to reduce or remove the debt before the SA-HELP incurral date. Your incurral date is the day after the payment due date listed in your fees statement.
