Add or withdraw from units
You can use the Web Enrolment System (WES) to add or withdraw from most units.
It's important to check the census and penalty dates for your teaching period before withdrawing from a unit, or you may face academic and financial penalties. These include having a fail recorded on your academic record and incurring fees or a loan debt.
Check units you’re currently enrolled in – title and code, campus, faculty, credit points and teaching period of each – with our virtual assistant – it only takes a moment, but you’ll need to first log in with your Monash student account.
Changing your study load
Part-time: If you’re enrolled as a full-time student you may not be able to withdraw from units unless you’re officially recorded as part-time. If you’re on a student visa you also have study load requirements to maintain.
Overloading: If you want to enrol in more than the standard number of units you need to first request to overload. You’ll also need to meet some conditions.
Before making changes to your units, find out more and check the processes for underloading and overloading.
Unit type | Add units | Semester one | Semester two |
---|---|---|---|
On-campus | By Friday of week two of the teaching period | 08 Mar | 02 Aug |
Off-campus | The Friday before teaching period starts | 23 Feb | 19 Jul |
How to add a unit
- Log into WES and click on Unit Enrolment.
- Click To add units click here at the top of the enrolment form.
- Search for the unit/s you want to add, but don’t click SUBMIT until you have:
- added all your new units and reached enough credit points for the year
- finished swapping units (dropping one and adding another).
- Click SUBMIT to save your changes.
If you get an error message saying you haven't enrolled in enough credit points, you'll need to add more units before WES will let you submit. To enrol in less than 48 credit points for the year, submit an Enrolment Amendment Form.
If you have any trouble adding units in WES, see troubleshooting in WES.
Adding units from other faculties
If you’ve got free elective space and you’re looking to explore another area of study, take a look at Monash Enrich – you’ll find electives from other faculties, programs and overseas study opportunities.
You can also use the Handbook to find more information on the units you’re interested in.

Dates to check
If you're enrolled as a full-time student, you may not be able to withdraw from multiple units unless you're officially recorded as part-time. If you're on a student visa, you also have study load requirements to maintain.
If you can’t add or withdraw from a unit
If you can’t add or withdraw from a unit in WES, submit an Enrolment Amendment Form. Research students need to contact their Graduate Research Faculty Office.
If you need more information about making unit changes, request course advice.
After you’ve made unit changes in WES
WES will email you a transaction number (starting with U) after you’ve successfully updated your enrolment. Keep this record.
You need to wait a couple of hours for changes to come through from WES before you can log into Allocate+ to update your timetable.
After the start of a teaching period, you need to allow up to 24 hours for your unit changes to appear in Moodle.
Penalties for withdrawing late
The following penalties apply to withdrawn units in most teaching periods after 11.59pm (Melbourne time) on the unit’s census date. To see what applies to your units, check your teaching period's census date.
If you’re a full-fee paying student and you withdraw from a unit after the census date, you still need to pay the fees.
Units added (with faculty approval) after the census date cannot be Commonwealth-supported. The University charges the full course fee and you can't get FEE-HELP for these units. Your fee statement will be updated to reflect the changes.

Update Allocate+
Once your unit changes appear in Allocate+ you can enter preference for new units and change preferences for any other units affected. Allocate+ will automatically remove withdrawn units.
Unit changes will appear in Allocate+ within two hours. If you submit your changes using a form, please allow staff several days to process the units.
