The University Health Services and special consideration
We encourage you to have a regular GP who you get to know and trust. It helps keep you healthy, and when you’re unwell, you have someone who knows you.
On-campus appointments are available with the doctors and counsellors at Monash University Health Services at Caulfield, Clayton and Peninsula.
If a medical or mental health condition prevents you from completing your assessment as scheduled, you’ll need a medical certificate (or approved alternative) as evidence of your exceptional circumstances when you apply for special consideration.
Make sure to speak with your health professional (general practitioner (GP), psychologist or counsellor) as soon as you feel unwell. If there’s no one you see regularly who’s familiar with your condition, you can go to any GP or other appropriate health professional for a supporting document, such as a medical certificate or medical letter of support. Some pharmacists may also provide one (possibly with a small fee).
A medical certificate or medical letter of support can be written only after a comprehensive assessment of your condition, and at the health professional’s discretion.
Do not, under any circumstances, submit fraudulent documentation
Penalties for submitting a forged, altered or falsified document can include exclusion from the University, a fine of up to AUD $1,000 and a permanent record in Monash systems.
To find out more about your responsibilities (and what you should do if you don’t have the required supporting documents), see our documentation integrity page.
Your appointment options
Health professionals are available on campus at the University Health Services (UHS). You can book a telehealth or face-to-face medical or counselling appointment at UHS.
If you’ve got a Medicare card or you’re an international student insured with Allianz Care Australia or Bupa, you won’t have any out-of-pocket costs at the UHS. If you’re insured with a different company, you’ll need to pay for the appointment, but you can claim a full refund from your insurer.
If you need an urgent appointment and can’t wait until the next available time offered online, phone the UHS clinic on your campus and ask to speak to the triage nurse who will guide you to the right help.
