How to work in Australia

When you’re in Australia on a student visa, you must not begin any job until you have started your course. You’re not allowed to work more than 48 hours per fortnight while studying unless the work is a registered component of your course. Go to working on a student visa for more details, including when you’re allowed to work unlimited hours.

The 48-hour work limit doesn’t apply if you’re a doctoral (PhD) or master’s by research student. But Monash may impose its own work restrictions if you’re a research student (particularly if you’re on a scholarship). Ask your supervisor for advice.

Workplace laws in Australia set out minimum terms and conditions of employment, such as wages, leave entitlements and hours of work. Find out more about your workplace rights.

The Study Melbourne Hub offers international students free and confidential legal advice, including on work-related matters.

Volunteering

You can give back to communities while you gain valuable employment skills by volunteering while you study. This is a great way to contribute your time and energy to many exciting and worthwhile projects.
