Students who are parents
The University supports students who are parents, carers, or preparing for parenthood or caregiving roles. We understand the unique challenges of balancing family, caregiving, and study commitments, so we're here to provide the assistance and resources you need to thrive in your studies.
Parenting rooms on campus
Students can access designated parenting rooms to breastfeed, and general baby care. Parenting rooms are available at each of our Australian campuses – for locations and facilities, see parenting rooms on campus.
Children on campus
We understand you may need to bring your children to campus in some circumstances (including bringing children into class if it’s necessary). Our children on campus page explains your rights and responsibilities in relation to children on campus, including guidance on when it’s appropriate for children to be on campus or involved in University activities.
Breastfeeding on campus
We're committed to supporting you being able to breastfeed or express breastmilk while you're undertaking your studies.
If you have any particular needs, require some different arrangements, study flexibility, or have any concerns, please contact your faculty/department to make an appointment to discuss how they can help and what would work best for you. See the breastfeeding procedure (pdf, 0.14 mb) for more information.
Breastfeeding includes chestfeeding an infant/child, and is intended to be inclusive of binary, non-binary and transmasculine people with the understanding that different terms may be used.
Special consideration and extensions for students
We recognise the diverse needs of students, including those with caring responsibilities. As a student with caring responsibility you may encounter circumstances that affect your ability to meet academic deadlines.
You can apply for a short extension (two calendar days) or a longer extension (generally more than two days) if you have circumstances that prevent you from completing your assessment by the due date. For more details on how to apply and the options available, take a look at our extensions and special consideration page.
Support
If at any time you feel that you've not been fully supported, or feel you’ve been treated unfairly – there’s help available from the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion team. They can also give you advice on diversity, inclusive practice and equal opportunity at Monash.
