Losing your place at Monash

The University may cancel your place in a course due to:

Non-compliance reasons

Unsatisfactory progress or inability to progress

Disciplinary reasons

Health reasons

We’ll send you an email if you’re at risk of exclusion or suspension – after that, you’ll have 20 University working days to lodge an appeal. If your appeal isn’t successful and you’ve been excluded or suspended, we’ll need to report this to the Department of Education. Once this is done, your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) will be cancelled.

Since your student visa requires you to be enrolled in a registered course, you might want to try enrolling with another university if you’ve been excluded from Monash. Keep in mind, the Department of Home Affairs could decide to cancel your visa if you remain in Australia and you’re not enrolled in a registered course (and you don’t have a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) for that course). If your visa is cancelled, you'll need to make arrangements to return home. Make sure you contact the Department of Home Affairs to discuss your options.

If you're suspended or excluded from Monash for disciplinary reasons, the Department of Home Affairs will also be informed (we’ll send you an email to let you know). They will look at your circumstances and decide whether or not they should investigate further.

For students in a Commonwealth supported place (CSP), the reasons may also include:

  • unpaid student contribution amount (Higher Education Support Act 2003)
  • not completing of a Request for Commonwealth Support or HECS-HELP form (Higher Education Support Act 2003).

The questionnaire and form are in the Web Enrolment System (WES).
