The Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) is a fee that students are required to pay each teaching period. It provides funding for non-academic student services and amenities that support you through university. For more information about the SSAF, visit the Department of Education website.
The amount you pay depends on your fee type and study load. The maximum amount charged for 2024 is $351.
You can use the calculator below to estimate how much you'll need to pay (calculated per year) – we start sending fees statements out in mid-December.
If you do need to pay the SSAF, the exact amount is included in your fees statement (in WES).
You’ll either make one or two payments of your SSAF per year, depending on the teaching periods you’re enrolled in. If you’re paying your SSAF in two instalments, the amounts may vary based on your study load – this is because we charge the part-time SSAF rate until your study load reaches 0.75EFTSL or above (then you’ll be charged the full-time rate).
Your fees statement includes the payment due date for your SSAF (unless you’re deferring payment with an SA-HELP loan).

If you have SA-HELP in 2024, your debt will be transferred to the tax office the day after the payment due date listed on your fees statement. You can still make partial or full payments before your incurral date to reduce or remove your debt.
Your SSAF isn’t covered by HECS-HELP or FEE-HELP loans, so you’ll either need to pay it up front, or if you’re eligible, defer all or part of the fee with an SA-HELP loan.
If you're an Australian citizen, a permanent humanitarian visa holder (resident in Australia) or a New Zealand special category visa holder who meets all the eligibility criteria, you can choose to:
Like HECS-HELP for your course fees, SA-HELP allows you to defer payment of the SSAF through a government loan. You can apply for an SA-HELP loan in the Web Enrolment System (WES). For all the details, check our SA-HELP page.
You’ll need to pay your SSAF up front if you're not an Australian citizen, a permanent humanitarian visa holder (resident in Australia), or a New Zealand special category visa holder who meets all the eligibility criteria.
Check your fees statement for the amount and due date. For payment methods, see our pay your fees page (for enrolled students).
We use the SSAF funding to make contributions to sport and recreation activities, student clubs, health and wellbeing initiatives, employment and career advice, and amenities on campus (according to the University Council’s current allocation principles and the services allowed by the Australian Government).
40% of the funding is spent on University-managed co-curricular programs, events and capital projects across all Australian campuses, as well as off-campus locations for medical students on placement.
Here are some recent examples of SSAF-funded activities from 2023:
40% is allocated to the Monash student associations, allowing them to deliver essential activities, services and facilities such as orientation activities, advocacy, student theatre, student clubs, artistic and cultural student engagement activities, sexual health promotions, tax advice and welfare services.
20% of the total funding is for student-identified capital projects (up to $300,000 in value) that enrich student life and experience across all campuses. Recent examples include renovating student clubs and cohort common rooms, upgrading fitness spaces, enhancing our student-run radio station studio, and purchasing staging and audio equipment for student events.
The SSAF you pay is allocated to the campus you’re based at – this means that if you’re studying at Clayton campus, 20% of your SSAF fee will be directly spent on Clayton projects. Contact your student association if you're not based at one of our main campuses (Caulfield, Clayton, Parkville and Peninsula) and you have a proposal for how SSAF funds can be used at your location.
Decisions about how this allocation should be spent are made by the SSAF Advisory Group (composed of both students from student associations and staff), based on submissions from each Campus Service Council for potential facility and service improvements.
We completed 92 projects in 2021. Here are some highlighted projects.
