If you’re under 18 years and you wish to change your caregiver or accommodation arrangements, you must have these requests approved.

Before enrolment

We will provide you with the necessary forms and advice on how to apply for approval.

After enrolment

If you have enrolled with Monash and want to change any of the arrangements outlined below, you must seek approval first or you will be in breach of your student visa.

The University is obliged to notify the Department of Home Affairs of any changes to your caregiver and accommodation arrangements.

Change of accommodation only

For approval to change your accommodation:

1. Email us at iss@monash.edu to meet with an International Student Engagement officer.
2. We will provide you with the required Monash form and notify you of the outcome.
3. If your change request is approved, you can move into your approved accommodation, and we will update your Confirmation of Appropriate Accommodation and Welfare (CAAW) letter.

Change of caregiver to a parent, custodian or eligible relative

To get approval to change your caregiver arrangements to a parent, custodian or eligible relative:

1. Email us at iss@monash.edu to meet with an International Student Engagement officer.
2. We will provide you with the required Monash form and help you lodge it.
3. Download and complete Form 157N: Nomination of a student guardian, from the Department of Home Affairs website.
4. When you receive a decision from the Department of Home Affairs, contact an International Student Engagement Officer so you can arrange to provide evidence of the decision.
5. If your change request is approved, your caregiver arrangements can now be changed, and your Confirmation of Appropriate Accommodation and Welfare (CAAW) letter will be cancelled, as it will no longer be required.

Change of caregiver to Monash College Guardianship Service

For approval to change your previously approved caregiver arrangements to one with the Monash College Guardianship Service:

1. Email us at iss@monash.edu to meet with an International Student Engagement officer.
2. We will help you to:
   • contact the Monash College Under 18 Guardianship Service to make arrangements for a guardian
   • submit the required form
   • communicate with the Department of Home Affairs about the changes.
3. If your change request is approved, your caregiver arrangements can now be changed, and we will update or create a Confirmation of Appropriate Accommodation and Welfare (CAAW) letter.

Approval for travel or nights away from approved accommodation

Students with the Monash College U18 Guardianship Service must gain approval before any travel or overnight stays away from their approved accommodation, including during semester breaks and holidays.

Approval is not automatic. To allow sufficient time for consideration, please discuss your plans with your Monash College Guardian at least 14 days in advance.
