Referral to responsible officer

Once Student Conduct and Complaints (SCC) has investigated an allegation of academic misconduct, they’ll refer the report to your faculty’s responsible officer who will decide to either:

  • dismiss the report and take no further action
  • refer the report to another area of the University
  • deal with the report informally
  • determine that you’ve engaged in academic misconduct and impose a penalty, or
  • refer the report to a Student Misconduct Panel.

Penalties after formal decision

If the responsible officer determines that you’ve engaged in academic misconduct, they’ll consider the seriousness of the offence, and/or whether you’ve been previously counselled for academic misconduct, when imposing a penalty. Penalties that could be imposed on you include, but are not limited to, those listed below.

Referral to Student Misconduct Panel

The responsible officer may refer your case to a Student Misconduct Panel if you’re already on the Academic Integrity Register for previous academic misconduct. You may also be referred to a Student Misconduct Panel if one of the following applies:

  • you’ve been reported for academic misconduct more than once during the same teaching period
  • you’ve allegedly helped others to engage in academic misconduct
  • your alleged academic misconduct involves alleged serious general misconduct (e.g. threats to staff or harassment)
  • strong evidence that you’ve engaged in serious academic misconduct (e.g. fraud, contract cheating or unauthorised distribution of course materials).

In this event, the Student Misconduct Panel is responsible for making a decision about the report, and imposing a penalty or penalties if it finds any of the above.

Notification of decision

Within seven University working days of the responsible officer reaching a decision, SCC will send the outcome to your Monash email address. And a copy will go to:

  • your unit’s chief examiner or their nominee
  • your faculty’s academic integrity officer
  • the faculty team who will carry out an action prompted by the responsible officer’s decision.

To protect your privacy, we won’t send a copy to your parent, guardian or sponsor.

A finding of academic misconduct will be kept on file and in the Academic Integrity Register for seven years, unless you’re enrolled in a course qualifying for law practice, in which case it will be kept permanently. But this finding won’t appear on your academic record (transcript).
