Sign Language @ Monash

Monash University is home to the largest cluster of researchers in Australia working on Auslan (Australian Sign Language) and other Sign Languages of our region. Sign Language @ Monash is committed to working with deaf people and organisations to produce research and technology that is useful to the community and has real-world practical applications.

We have over 15 years of experience partnering with deafness organisations, government and philanthropics to deliver projects that change practice for the better while advancing our academic fields and producing high quality research outcomes. We are proud founding members of the Monash Assistive Technology Centre and have particular expertise in developing sign language technologies – including dictionary making (Signbank) automatic sign language recognition and the production of learning resources.

Associate Professor Louisa Willoughby leads a team of researchers working across the Arts, IT and Medical faculties on projects spanning Auslan teaching, Deafblind communication, Auslan lexicography (dictionary making) and access to medical information.
