In the business of helping others

Utilising the power of data, Leshi Wang is empowering others, including women and children affected by domestic violence.

Leshi Wang says she has a motto that motivates her: “Don’t let your ambition outstrip your talent.”

“Living in an innovative technology era, the markets and industries are dynamic,” Ms Wang says.

“You must keep learning and enriching yourself to gain a competitive advantage and stand out.”

Ms Wang, currently pursuing a Master of Commerce specialising in Business Analytics at University of Sydney, is doing just that.

“One of my introductions to data analytics was during a marketing unit at Monash learning about the importance of validating our recommendations with data found during market research,” she says.

“During my studies, I found many reports use second-hand data and I questioned the validation of these sources and their accuracy. Eager to learn more about this and apply correct data processing techniques to my career, I enrolled as a data analytic major.”

Ms Wang’s thirst for knowledge is reaping rewards, such as an invitation to the exclusive international business honour society Beta Gamma Sigma after graduating in the top 20 per cent of her undergraduate class at Monash Business School.

Using her passion for learning for good

For Ms Wang, learning isn’t just about accolades and rewards.

On top of her studies, she said was passionate about using her knowledge to support not-for-profit organisations such as Sydney’s Mary's House Services Limited and the Polish Saturday School Association Incorporated in Brisbane.

“One of my career highlights included being a member of the consulting team at Mary’s House Services,” she says.

“My role was to identify and apply for various grants to support their mission; empowering women and children to live a life free of domestic violence and abuse.”

“What I found most beneficial while studying at Monash was the opportunity to apply my knowledge to different industries.”

Ms Wang is also actively involved in the university community.

“(I volunteer) at the student union and as a postgraduate peer mentor, which involves supporting seven first-year students with their transition to university and helping them integrate into the university community,” she says.

“Being a mentor is very rewarding, which I enjoy immensely.

“I like being available to answer any queries they may have about campus services, in which I am able to share my insights relating to their studies.”

Benefits of studying business at Monash

Ms Wang says the flexibility of her Monash degree allowed her to explore different areas.

“What I found most beneficial while studying at Monash was the opportunity to apply my knowledge to different industries, through my internships at an accounting firm, a security company and a chambers of commerce,” she says.

“Throughout my degree, there were also great opportunities to develop my employability skills by being a student ambassador.

“This involved volunteering during an Open Day gaining experience in teamwork, communication and time-management skills.”

Advice to new graduates

Ms Wang says new graduates build their networks through Career Advisers and social events as “only half of the job opportunities are posted publicly”.

“Never be afraid of not being shortlisted for an interview as each missed opportunity is a valuable lesson,” she says.

“Students should try and plan your future and career path before you graduate as there are benefits to making plans way in advance.”
