Peter is a specialist Sport & Exercise Physician, health educator, media commentator, Olympic athlete, corporate speaker, administrator…and is still looking for his calling in life!
He has been involved in sport all his life having had his first competitive race at age 3 against his much older brother (Peter won).
He was the first ever “Little Athlete” at John Landy field in Geelong in 1962 and subsequently became the first athlete to progress through from Little Athletics to Olympic track & field selection for the Montreal Games in 1976.
A successful schoolboy footballer, cricketer and runner, Peter was selected in his first Australian team at age 20 and was a member of the team for the next 10 years including Olympic, World Cup and Commonwealth games events.
He was selected in every Australian track & field team from 1975 until 1983 as a middle distance runner and was National team captain in 1983.
His sporting life fueled his interest in all aspects of human performance including the physiology of fitness, nutrition, sports injury management and the mental application to achieve at the highest level.
These principles can be equally applied to sports performance or productivity and success in the workplace and life in general.
During his international sport career Peter completed university degrees in medicine and exercise physiology and also established the first solo sports physician practice in Australia. He has been team physician for many sports including the Australian cricket team, triathlon, lacrosse and track and field teams.
He was also a medical officer in the AFL with Geelong and Adelaide teams.
He has travelled extensively observing health and fitness trends around the world and how this information can be applied to everyday individuals in their working lives.
In more recent years he has also focused on community and population health by delivering messages on healthy lifestyle to all individuals regardless of their age or ability. He is passionate about promoting healthy living for all to improve quality of life, longevity and to reduce health care costs in the Australian community. He believes many of the lessons learnt from dealing with elite performance can be applied to everyday health and fitness achievements.
He is a regularly invited speaker and author on a wide range of sports medicine topics and has been a medical commentator on multi media networks including Channel 9 and Channel 7 television as well as Austereo and Fairfax radio, particularly on matters relating to AFL football. He has also written a regular sports injury column in the Herald Sun newspaper in Melbourne. He has regularly appeared on Fox Footy channel and had a weekly medical segment on the afl.com website.
Peter is regularly seen and heard on current affairs and lifestyle television or radio programs in his role as spokesperson on health and fitness topics including past roles with the Australian Medical Association, Sports Medicine Australia and the Australasian College of Sport and Exercise Physicians.
Individuals can have more control over their health than they realise and Peter is passionate about education and promoting the role of healthy living choices in helping all individuals to maximise their performance in work and personal lives. This means having strategies to address all components of successful health – physical, emotional and spiritual.
