Matt Cowgill

Chief Economist, Commonwealth Department of Employment and Workplace Relations

Matt Cowgill is Chief Economist at the Commonwealth Department of Employment and Workplace Relations, a role created in 2024 to provide economic analysis and advice to support DEWR’s role as stewards of the Australian labour market. Before joining the department, Matt was SEEK’s economist, working with their extensive data to extract insights about the Australian labour market. He has also worked as an economist at a range of other organisations including Grattan Institute, the International Labour Organization, and the Victorian public service. Matt has a Masters in economics from the University of London and undergraduate degrees in economics and political science from the University of Western Australia.
