CHE Seminar Series: Microsimulation applied to mental health: the use of microsimulation to inform psychosis-related health policy
In a time of limited health care resources, it is crucial to make informed decisions around resource allocation. Microsimulation models are computer-based models that can be used to simulate the behaviour of micro-entities, such as individuals, and are commonly employed to estimate the potential behavioural and economic effects of interventions and/or health policies, and to help guide decision-making. Furthermore, microsimulation models can be used to examine scenarios, which cannot be tested in the context of a trial. This talk will review briefly the existing literature on microsimulation models applied to mental health as well as describe the PSY-SIM model, a microsimulation model developed for research and policy guidance purposes in the area of psychosis. In short, the PSY-SIM model simulates lifetime trajectories of individuals living with psychosis, such as health outcomes and health care costs, to help quantify disease burden, estimate effectiveness and cost effectiveness of interventions, and inform mental health care policy. An illustration will be provided, which will examine and compare the impact of smoking cessation initiatives on outcomes, such as death and public health care costs, among a cohort of individuals living with psychosis.

Weekly seminar series
As part of our Centre's vibrant research culture, we host a weekly seminar series. Visiting and invited researchers present current research relating to the economics of health and wellbeing, and the healthcare sector. Visitors are welcome to join these sessions where discussion and debate is encouraged.
