CHE Seminar Series: Resilient or scarred? Mortality and morbidity after natural disasters
This paper explores the health consequences of natural disasters using large administrative datasets from the United States. It examines how exposure to tornadoes and wildfires affects physical and mental health, with a particular focus on vulnerable populations and the persistence of these effects over time.
Speaker profile
Andrew Ireland is the 2026 McKenzie Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Economics at the University of Melbourne. His research in applied microeconomics focuses on labour markets, the environment, and health. His work uses large administrative and survey datasets to study how environmental shocks affect health and labour market outcomes. Before joining Melbourne, Andrew was a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Illinois Urbana–Champaign and completed his PhD at the Centre for Health Economics, Monash University.
