Now in its seventh year, this workshop is hosted by the Energy, Environment and Resource Economics research group at the Department of Economics at Monash Business School, in collaboration with the Centre for Development Economics and Sustainability (CDES).

MEEW is a research-intensive workshop that welcomes papers on environmental and resource economics, with theoretical, experimental, and empirical papers equally valued.

In line with the workshop’s goals of building and strengthening our environmental economics community, MEEW 2023 will take place face-to-face in Melbourne, from 30 November to 1 December.

Professor E. Somanathan, Economics and Planning Unit, Indian Statistical Institute

Prof Somanathan is founding head of a policy-relevant research centre (CECFEE, Centre for research on the Economics of Climate, Food, Energy, and Environment) in the Indian Statistical Institute. He has studied the evolution of reciprocal behaviour in the management of natural resources using evolutionary game theory. Some of his recent work is on forest management, household air pollution, groundwater depletion, and climate impacts in South Asia.

Prof Somanathan has also served on various committees of the government of India on environmental policy and was a Coordinating Lead Author for the IPCC. He is a Co-Editor of the journal Environment and Development Economics published by Cambridge University Press.

His work has appeared in Science, Nature Climate Change, Psychological Review, Psychological Bulletin, American Psychologist, and Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.

He was Associate Editor of Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, and the President of the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology. Professor Kashima's plenary talk will be held on the second day.
