Public Lecture: What can we learn from Uber?

In this lecture, What can we learn from Uber? Three large-scale field experiments on tipping, the gender pay gap and apologies, we invite students, alumni, academics, researchers and practitioners to hear about John’s work with Uber.
Field experiments with organisations like Uber have become an important creator of knowledge in the social sciences. Professor John List uses field experiments to test how people behave in natural settings and whether their behaviour is consistent with economic theory.
In this lecture, he will focus on the ride-share industry by discussing three large-scale field experiments with Uber. All three field experiments - on the economics of tipping, the gender pay gap and apologies in the gig economy - have driven company decisions and shed new scientific light on important economic issues.

John List is the Kenneth C. Griffin Distinguished Service Professor in Economics. He has pioneered work using field experiments in which he developed scientific methods for testing economic theory directly in the marketplace.
His work has provided insight on such issues as pricing behaviour, market structure, the valuation of non-marketed goods and services, the impact of environmental regulation, the economics of charitable giving, and the impact of incentives on education and weight loss List has been at the forefront of environmental economics and has served as senior economist on the President’s Council of Economic Advisers for Environmental and Resource Economics.
He is a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research, a research fellow at the Institute for the Study of Labor and in 2015 received an honorary doctorate from Tilburg University in the Netherlands. He is the recipient of the Arrow Prize for Senior Economists and Kenneth Galbraith Award. Professor List is a Distinguished Visiting Professor with the Department of Economics at Monash Business School. At the University of Chicago, he is the Homer J Livingston Professor of Economics and past Chairman of the Department of Economics.
