Workshop on energy markets
The Australian Electricity Market Initiative (AEMI) at Monash Business School is proud to present this one-day workshop on the economics of energy markets.
In these unprecedented times, and as the energy transition accelerates, this small-format workshop could not be more timely.
The workshop will feature six expert speakers who will share their research, with ample opportunities for discussions and interactions with them and other colleagues.
Keynote speaker
Dr Omer Karaduman, Assistant Professor of Operations, Information and Technology, Graduate School of Business, Stanford University

Dr Karaduman completed his PhD in Economics at MIT in 2020, and got his bachelor's degree in Economics from Bilkent University in 2014.
His research focuses on the transition of the energy sector towards a decarbonized and sustainable future. He utilises large datasets by using game-theoretical modelling to have practical policy.
View Dr Karaduman’s research abstract: ‘Large Scale Wind Power Investment's Impact on Wholesale Electricity Market’.
Speakers
Associate Professor Anke Leroux, Department of Economics, Monash Business School

Anke Leroux is an environmental and natural resource economist and Associate Professor at the Department of Economics at Monash University.
She is particularly interested in problems of optimal natural resource use and conservation under conditions of risk, uncertainty and irreversibility. Her theoretical, empirical and experimental work has been published in the top journals of her field, including the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, the American Journal of Agricultural Economics, the Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization and Water Resources Research. She has applied her research on climate change adaptation to inform policy in the areas of optimal land use, biodiversity and habitat conservation, biosecurity and water management.
Dr Darryl Biggar, Special Economic Advisor to the ACCC and Adjunct Associate Professor, Monash Business School

Dr Biggar is the Special Economic Adviser (Regulatory) at the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) and the Australian Energy Regulator (AER). He provides advice on a range of competition and regulation matters, especially relating to the design of markets and regulatory frameworks in the energy sector.
In August 2014 Wiley published his textbook (with Mohammad Hesamzadeh), The Economics of Electricity Markets. He has also published in a number of economics and engineering journals, including IEEE Transactions on Power Systems, Energy Policy, and the Journal of Regulatory Economics. In 2010 Dr Biggar won the inaugural distinguished scholar award from the International Confederation of Energy Regulators.
Dr Kelly Neill, Lecturer, University of Sydney

Dr Neill’s research interests lie in empirical industrial organisation and energy economics. Her work has focused on competition in natural gas markets, particularly in Australia.
She has studied how electricity and gas markets interact, vertical integration of gas retailers, and the consequences of restricting liquefied natural gas exports. She is also interested in electricity reliability. Dr Neill is a Non-resident Scholar at the Center for Energy Studies, in Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy.
Dr Gordon Leslie, Senior Lecturer, Monash Business School

Dr Leslie is an economist, with fields of study in industrial organisation and energy economics.
His research examines competition, consumer engagement, policy, and regulation in energy markets, particularly in the context of the clean energy transition.
Dr Leslie received his PhD from Stanford University and his BCom(Hons) and BSc from the University of Melbourne.
Professor Edward (Eddie) Anderson, The University of Sydney Business School

Eddie Anderson is Professor of Decision Sciences and previously held the position of Associate Dean (Research) and Associate Dean (Research Education) at the University of Sydney Business School.
Prior to joining the University of Sydney in 2008, he was at the Australian Graduate School of Management, University of New South Wales.
Eddie has an honours degree in Mathematics from Cambridge, and a PhD in Operations Management, also from the University of Cambridge.
