Structural transformation and urban sprawl
This project studies rural-urban migration and the patterns of urbanization in China over the past 30 years. We use satellite imagery and supervised recognition algorithms to identify the dynamics of land use in Chinese cities, most notably through the location of new production units and new residential buildings. The research exploits large shocks to agricultural returns, which trigger migrant flows into urban areas, and assesses the (causal) impact of these flows on urban growth and the well-known empirical regularities observed in developing economies: urban sprawl, co-agglomeration of factories, unequal access to urban amenities, unequal exposure to environmental disamenities, and residential segregation.
Presented by Yanos Zylberberg (University of Bristol) joint with Clement Imbert (Warwick) and Marlon Seror (UQAM)
